JBL Reference 610 Wireless Headphone (Black) Review

JBL Reference 610 Wireless Headphone (Black)

I have been using these headphones recently with my iPod touch running the new 3.0 software update, and I would have to say that I am mostly happy with the results. The two pair up really easy, I just leave the bluetooth on on the iPod and all I have to do is press power on the headphones and then play once to connect, and play once more to hear music. The range is fantastic, I plug my iPod into the computer at work when the battery is low and I can walk all over the mailroom floor with no interruptions. One thing I do enjoy is the nice deep bass these provide. I am sort of a bass junky though and others may find it a bit too much.
My complaints would have to be that 1.) I am not to fond of the shape and size of them. The headband sits behind the cups and it feels like they are always going to fall off your head, and they are pretty big. 2.) Not all the functions work with the iPod Touch. I can use play and pause, as well as volume adjustment. However I can not skip songs. I believe this is an issue with the iPod software/hardware rather than the the headphones though because when I used them on an iPod nano and classic with the dongle they worked great, and you could even navigate the menus and everything. 3.) Occasionally they will cut out and it sounds a bit like a CD skipping but nothing so sever that I am upset by it. 4.) They are hot. The leather(?) around the ear cups fits really well and keeps the sound of my rather noisy job out, but they keep the heat in just as well, and often I have to take them off because they simply get too warm. Lastly I kind of wish they had a mic built in so I could pair them with my phone, but this is not really a complaint more than it is just a wish.
I hope this review was helpful and I do recommend these headphones to anyone looking for a great set of bluetooth headphones. Thank You.

Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black) Review

Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know just enough about Audio to be dangerous but I'm not a true audiophile (or whatever they're called). So I don't know how an average person would figure this out when it took me an hour and a half on the phone with Sony support before THEY figured it out.
Now this is my second Sony receiver and I purchased this one specifically to go along with my brand new Sony BDP-S360 Blu Ray player. I used brand new HDMI category 2 cables into the receiver and then out to my Sony HDTV. This is suppossed to be the BEST way to get true no-loss sound decoding and picture. Well I was shocked when my receiver was NOT decoding DTS audio. All Dolby Digital tracks were playing in perfect 5.1 surround sound...the DTS tracks played back in Linear PCM stereo. So after I read the manuals, updated the firmware and set everything right then trying a few DVDs and Blu Ray discs I contacted Sony Support via email. Several exchanges later they asked me to call in to better troubleshoot my issue. First I talked to the blu ray guy (since I wasn't sure which device was causing the issue) and after resetting the player and checking all the setting I was transfered to the Audio department. Once again we reset the machine to factory setting, checked all the set ups and still nothing changed (Did I mention that I had to unhook and reconnect several cables and I even had an optical cable running to my old Sony Reciever?). Then 1 1/2 hours into the phone call he asked if I was getting audio through the TV speakers which I was and he said "oh its set to TV + Amp". So we changed that setting to just "Amp" and bingo...DTS surround sound!! I said "but that's the factory default setting". He told me where the info was in the manual but I checked an NOWHERE in the manual does it say that when using the receiver as a passthrough via HDMI inorder to decode a DTS signal the receiver must be set to "Amp" only and not the default setting of "TV + Amp". What the...??
So now the receiver works great even decoding the new DTS-HD Master Audio off my "Watchmen" Blu Ray disc. But be warned that if you use the HDMI inputs to decode your surround sound be sure to change the system to "Amp" instead of the default "TV + Amp" unless you enjoy stereo sound from your suround sound system. This may be the case for other Sony receivers so be aware when buying that factory default setting may not allow for optimum performance and the Sony guys might not be aware of this little fact if you call them.

NETGEAR Wireless Digital Music Player Review

NETGEAR Wireless Digital Music Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now that I have this set up it does exactly what I wanted it to very well -- that is, in a wired network environment, it streams all the mp3 files that I have on my PC's hard drive through my traditional two-channel audio setup. It has a number of limitations: it doesn't support Internet radio, except for a paid service, and it doesn't support various rights-protected data formats. But it does do the one thing I bought it for extremely well: allowing me to enjoy my entire music collection in an organized, well catalogued way, through my home audio system.
As this whole field of products is still pretty new, I also didn't want to spend more money on one of the more advanced systems -- it seems that the customer feedback on all of these media players remains pretty mixed. So I stuck with something relatively simple, and this little box does what I want for a reasonable price. (Previously I was using my iPod on a docking station, connected to my stereo...for the modest price of this Netgear player I've now liberated the iPod that previously was wired up to my stereo.)
A couple of cautions:
1. A lot of the customer problems cited here at Amazon seem to relate to problems with wireless transmission. I did not even try to set this up in a wireless network; I just hard-wired it into the network port I had installed in my living room. I have had a lot of frustration in my home w/wireless devices so finally just gave up and dropped in wiring for a home network while I was having other electrical work done in my house. I am glad I bit the bullet -- the wired network is saving me a lot of time and trouble. This Netgear product is just one example of the kinds of things that are very happy tethered to a wire that seem to be much more problematic when they are wireless.
2. Throw away the software disk that comes with the hardware -- don't install it!. Instead, download the new software and firmware that is on Netgear's site. I couldn't get this to work at all at first -- tech support advised me to uninstall the provided software, download the software update on their site, and start over. This got more complicated than it sounds because I'd already built a database of songs for the Netgear and I had to hunt down this database file and kill it, too...it got a little bit tricky...so it took me a couple of hours in all to get this fixed. Had I started with the new software posted on Netgear's site, I would have had the whole thing done in 20 minutes. In any case, just go right to netgear's site and download their new software, and don't use the junk they ship with the product.
I also found netgear's tech support to be very, very good -- they answered the phone quickly (on Christmas Eve!) and were extremely helpful and patient.

Saitek A-250 Wireless 2.1 Speaker System - Black Review

Saitek A-250 Wireless 2.1 Speaker System - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First the limitations: You cannot get sound out of both your desktop speakers and the A-250 at the same time, and the wireless connection is only about 85% reliable, even within its advertised range of 30 meters. Sound cuts out if there are too many thick walls between the transmitter and the speakers. Also, other electronics, microwaves, and my 2.5 GHz cordless telephones can interfere with the signal to the A-250.
If you can tolerate these limitations, then you can consider the great pleasures of the A-250:
-- Easy set-up. It honestly took me three minutes to get sound from my XP system using RealPlayer to the A-250. You plug in the transmitter to a USB port, press the blue button on top of the transmitter for two seconds, put batteries into the speaker unit, and then turn it on.
-- Very good sound. For a wireless system, the A-250 produces very good, albeit not very loud, sound. When the signal is strong, the sound is better than FM though not as good as wired, of course.
-- Simple controls. From the A-250 you can pause, play, skip a track forwards or backwards, and control the volume.
-- Works with my Palm Zire71. Saitek includes a 3.5mm jack, which when plugged into my Palm, played sound well through the A-250.
-- Fast support. I emailed Saitek regarding the limitations, and someone wrote back within a day to tell me that the limitations are not surmountable.
Summary: If you don't mind playing sound only out of the A-250 in a different room with few walls between it and your system, and if you don't mind imperfect sound, then the A-250 is for you. I will keep mine, since I can tolerate these limitations and I love my music on the deck and in the kitchen.

Panasonic SC-HT930 5-Disc DVD Home Theater System Review

Panasonic SC-HT930 5-Disc DVD Home Theater System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just recently purchased this item. The sound is great, extremely loud and clear for both DVDs and CDs. It is not the most user friendly piece of equipment ever, it was easy to set up and get working with DVDs, but some other things that you'd think would be simple, like putting CDs on random was suprisingly difficult. The instructions are all but useless.
The other thing that is obviously my fault for not realizing it, is it doesn't include digital inputs so you can't listen to cable shows that are broadcast in surround or video games that support surround in true surround. I didn't understand that requirement when I bought it and was disappointed when I figured it out. Seems like a system that nice should have the ability to generate surround sound from an outside source.
Also got the wireless rear speaker kit and it has worked really well so far. It will occasionally fight with my wireless laptop if I sit between the unit and back speakers, but it switches channels by itself and works perfectly after a few seconds.

Sharper Image 10X Wireless Headphones with Class 1 Bluetooth (AA001)

Since Sharper Image filed for Chapter 11 they are selling these for about a $100 - which is a fair price, IMO. I bought one for evaluation, then came back another day to pick up a 2nd pair for my spouse. They are comfortable and perform well at long range as I walked all over the house while listening to music. The only con I found so far is that it seems to me that when two sets of these headphones are on at times they interfere w/each other (sound jitters - appears/disappears). It also has a built-in microphone which I have not tested out yet - definitely will cause I got PlayStation 3 which I paired them with no problem. Also, sometimes the base will not turn off when I press the power on/off button - seems like a little glitch. Overall, I think it's a very nice bluetooth stereo w/SRS and mic headphones.

We tried several different wireless headsets before settling on the RS-130 and could not be happier. My wife and I wanted a wireless headset while use our treadmill and everything we tried was uncomfortable, wiggled around, just plain fall off, or worked like crap. The RS-130 was the answer to our prayers. It is a solid piece of equipment which is really comfortable and stays on your head (we have tried it as high as 8.5 MPH). The quality of sound is exceptional and has yet to give us any trouble. My wife has started to recommend this headset to her friends at work (who are taking part in the presidential challenge for Feds)who want to watch TV or listen tunes and complain about the noise of their equipment, home life and/or gym.

RCA RCU1010 Universal 9 Device Touch Screen Remote Control Review

RCA RCU1010 Universal 9 Device Touch Screen Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't understand everyone else's negative reviews about the learning feature of this remote. For most of my components it took a little extra time and patience, but it got there eventually. The most trouble I had was with my Apex DVD player; the remote preset code wouldn't work and I had to program each button individually. The functions were "forgotten" a few times, but I patiently kept reprogramming and now it finally seems to have stuck. Sure, if I had paid a ridiculous amount for it, this would be unacceptable, but you ALWAYS get what you pay for. I've learned that lesson time and time again.
When I tried programming a second DVD player onto Aux, it screwed up the main player's settings. I haven't tried it again since successfully getting the first to stay in there. There are 4 Audio buttons which unfortunately only offer soft keys suited for audio operation, not adaptable to DVD players. So for now I'm holding onto my lesser-used player's remote.
The pros:
Programming wasn't difficult, I don't think I even bothered reading the manual.
I like that the permanent hard keys are play, FF, rewind, as I need those for 3 of the 5 components I am operating. The prior touchscreen remote I tried (Sima) had those as soft keys, which was annoying.
The response time for the keys seems adequate.
The blue-lit screen looks very high-tech and buttons aren't too hypersensitive about hitting the wrong one.
I love the punch-through feature for the volume keys. On the Sima I had to constantly switch back to TV to change volume.
The touchscreen material makes it very easy to wipe fingerprints off. Keeps it looking newer longer.
I love the PDA look of the unit.
I love FINALLY having only one remote on the coffee table, rather than two or three.
The cons:
The biggest con I can see is the placement of the hard keys. Being at the bottom, it is impossible to use this with only one hand. Would have been better to reverse hard keys and touchscreen (or provided longer hand grip underneath hard keys).
Not able to relabel soft keys for special functions. But from what I have read, only the top-of-the-line models let you do this. Again, you get what you pay for.
Kind of silly to have a "mute" button so prominently placed in the center of the hard keys. Our family never uses it. I wish it could have been reprogrammed for an important Tivo function instead.
Backlight doesn't stay on long enough, and impossible to see screen in the dark without it. Time will tell what kind of wear this puts on the batteries.
Overall I'd say this is a great value for the price. Some people who are more demanding with higher expectations might want to look at higher end units, though.
****EDIT****: 9 months later the remote has forgotten all my codes repeatedly and now nothing will stick. It's back to operating only the TV. Guess you have to pay top dollar to have a remote that is really and truly universal. Subtract 3 of those stars.

RCA WHP140 900 MHz Wireless Headphones Review

RCA WHP140 900 MHz Wireless Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these mainly for use with a TV and I have no complaints. The sound quality is good, and the range is throughout my house. I can keep listening to a show if I have to take the dog outside. They are comfortable. I can easily wear them for the duration of a movie. I use rechargeable batteries, and they last over a month with about 2 hours of use per day. I also use them occasionally to listen to music and the quality is almost as good as a corded pair of headphones that I have.
There are two knobs on the right hand side. One is the volume control and the other for tuning. It takes a few days until you learn which is which. After that, you won't fiddle with the tuning when you want to adjust the volume. I have never had any interference and so never needed to adjust the tuning.
These are definitely useful when you want to keep the sound to yourself or roam about while listening to headphones. Also, voices are much easier to understand through headphones than through speakers, especially during a movie. I wouldn't mind using corded headphones except that I don't want to sit close to the TV and I want to be able to walk around occasionally.
The base unit shuts off about a minute after you turn off the source. If I mute the TV during a long set of commercials, the base shuts down and all you hear is noise. This is so that you can shut off the headphones without having to get up to shut off the base. I learned to turn down the volume on the unit instead of using the mute during long commercials.
You can either plug the base into a headphone jack or, with the adapter, into RCA plugs labeled audio out. I don't notice any difference in terms of sound quality between the two.

Sharper Image SR277 - Left / right channel speakers Review

Sharper Image SR277 - Left / right channel speakers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Appearance: The wireless speakers have an aerodynamic appearance to them and are made out of plastic. I'm fine with the plastic because I plan to use these outside and if it starts to rain or gets hit with the hose, I won't have to worry about anything.

Reception: I live in a townhouse with 4 units per building and the signal seems to work pretty darn good! I plugged the transmitter into my computer headphone jack (located in my basement) and the audio signals pass through the walls and floors. I was able carry the speakers to my first floor, second floor, outside and in my garage all with clear reception. The "auto tune" feature works great to find the clearest signal and I haven't experienced any problems with cordless phones causing interference.
Volume/Tuning controls: Having the volume and tuning controls on the speakers and on the wireless remote control make it easy to control the volume from anywhere.
Power: Each speaker requires 6 C batteries which tends to get a little pricey. However, the package also includes 2 AC power cords so you can just plug it in and run it off of electricity. So far, I've ran my speakers only on the batteries for about 5 hours and the batteries don't seem to be dying yet.
Sound: OK, now for the most important question, what kind of sound quality do these things put out? If you're expecting absolute, superior sound quality (like you would from some top of the line, wired speakers) then you may want to re-evaluate the idea of wireless speakers. If you're just looking to sit outside on the porch, around the pool or just kick back and listen to some music, these will work JUST fine! At first, the speakers sounded a bit bass heavy and somewhat "booming." But, after I adjusted all the audio settings on my computer (the source of the music), the quality GREATLY improved!

Sony DAV-IS50/B 5.1-Channel Micro Satellite Home Theater System (Black) Review

Sony DAV-IS50/B 5.1-Channel Micro Satellite Home Theater System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Sony DAV-IS50 has been mine now for a few weeks and it just keeps amazing me how much quality (and quantity!) sound it is able to produce from such small satellite speakers and how much functionality and easy of use the small unit offers. Thanks to the wireless rear speakers, I had no worries about cables running through my room. The subwoofer is huge and it took a bit of trial and error to find a spot for it where it wasn't a nuisance. The rest of the set-up was a breeze.
I've read reviews complaining about a lack of high tones and that the system doesn't give you enough of a real theater feel for lack of volume but in my house, I don't think I will ever set the volume up to the maximum level and the high tones are equal or better than any other system I've heard in this price range. I'm sure there are better home theater systems out there with more power and quality, but those are way beyond my budget (component systems) and will not give you the same compact style and ease of use that this system does.
Overall, this home-theater-system-in-a-box has exceeded my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a home theater system in this price range.

This is one of the best ipod accessory purchases I've made. The sound quality is better than my ibuds that came with the ipod, and I love not having a wire connecting me to my ipod. The initial pairing to my ipod and palm treo 800 was very easy and it works well for the most part. The only fault I have noticed is the transitioning after completing a call the headset sometimes doesn't transition back to the ipod without me unplugging and replugging the transceiver back into the ipod. This doesn't happen all the time, but I have noticed this happen more than once and I've own this headset for only about a week-I'm not sure if this is the headset or if it is my dumb phone, probably the phone as I have had numerous problems with the treo 800w. The headphones are very comfortable and the remote on the headset works great. You can pause, play, search, skip all from the headset- no problems with that. The range on the headset is about 15 feet depending on where you're at and the amount of interference in the area. The battery life is something that I haven't tested, but the manual suggests that it is 16 hours, but I highly doubt that. Everyone will have you believe that their product runs for double what it is capable of-the people at apple would like you to believe their ipods video will play for 6 hours, but in actuality it will run 3 1/2 to 4 hours on a full charge. But, overall the headset is great. I'm trying to figure out if I can pair it to my computer, so I can talk on skype. I'll have to tinker with it some more.

Just bought these along with the TMR-BT8 iPod adapter. Pairing is very easy. While the headphones are off, hold down the power button for 7 seconds or when the pink and blue lights are blinking. The pairing code is 0000.
In addition to my 5th gen iPod, I also paired it with my Razr V3xx and Thinking T61p. No problems at all and the sound is as clear as with my wired headphones. These headphones do not have very much bass but it's much better than average in-the-ear types. The treble range is pretty good and better than average as well. Wireless range is very good, as long as there aren't too many obstacles. I was able to go at least 40 feet away with no cutting out at all. Simply amazing. Other features include controlling devices with the jog dial and volume buttons, which I was able to do with all 3 of my devices. I have not tried making or receiving a call from them yet but I don't perceive that I will have any problems. But with all the good, there's always a little bad. The control buttons do not feel firm and makes the whole thing seem fragile. In general I am careful with my electronics so this will not be a problem. I could see using these at the gym but I wouldn't drop them or place undue stress on them. This one is minor but the charger looks like it was designed to be compact but the prongs do not fold in and away. I could see traveling with these headphones on a business trip and being able to drop it in my laptop case would've been nice. And lastly, at this price, they should've included a case, preferably a hard plastic one.
Pros:
1. Easy pairing between devices
2. Very good wireless range
3. Intuitive controls
4. Battery life seems to be very good so far
5. Clear sound with no cutting out
6. Better than average sound quality
Cons:
1. Seems a little fragile
2. Prongs do not fold in on compact AC charger
3. No case included
UPDATE (8/11/08):
Now that I've had these headphones for 8 months, I found out that I can pair my phone and iPod simultaneously. I can be listening to the iPod and when a call comes in, the iPod pauses, and I can take the call. Once the call is over, the iPod resumes playing.
UPDATE (11/5/08):
These headphones work with my iPhone 3G but with caveats. First, you must use the Sony TMR-BT8 iPod adapter. You CANNOT just pair through the iPhone's built-in bluetooth AND you must not have it set to "on" before using the Sony adapter. It's probably best not to have bluetooth turned on at all. Second, you must have the adapter in and be in iPod mode before turning on headphones or they won't pair up. Third, you can get phone calls but they will not go through the headphones. And as with all previous iPhone accessories, you will be told that the adapter is an older accessory and may not work, do you want airplane mode. Just select "no" and don't worry about it. I think I covered all of the caveats. What is nice is that you can use the A2DP functions of the headphones like play/stop/FF/RW and volume, you will hear the phone ring in the headphones, and the music will resume once your call is over.
UPDATE (9/28/09):
iPhone ONLY. Now with the 3.0 firmware upgrade, there is no need for the Sony TMR-BT8 iPod adapter anymore. However, while you can play/stop music, you do not have prev/next or reverse/fast-forward functions. I recently upgraded to the iPhone 3GS and still no go on those functions. Hopefully this gets fixed in a future firmware upgrade.

Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX285 5.1-Channel Theater System (Black) Review

Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX285 5.1-Channel Theater System (Black)

I bought this product but am not using it for any kind of video display so I can't speak to it for that. I'm using it as a sound system for my ipod and computer and it hasn't let me down. The sound really packs a punch and is really nice if you use the right equalizer to get the proper balance in sound. The only drawback is that it doesn't put out any sound when using these functions through the center speaker so really its just like having a 4.1 system unless you use it as a surround system for a tv. It goes pretty loud considering i haven't really gone above 22 volume even though it goes up to 34. The balance is really good, although I tend to like a little more bass in my music, which it offers plenty of. Great system that isn't too pricey. Would recommend to anyone who wants an easy way to get out of having to use a 2.1 system on a laptop.

Terk AF-9330 AM/FM Indoor Amplified Tower Antenna Review

Terk AF-9330 AM/FM Indoor Amplified Tower Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was hoping to improve reception on a few stations , so I decided to replace the twin lead dipole (passive) antenna that came with my new tuner with the Terk Tower. I have the AM Advantage loop and that works fairly well, so I figured this powered antenna would be a lot better.
Well, bad reasoning. On FM, it doesn't work NEARLY as well as a 32" piece of plain old wire on any of my radio recievers. In some cases, stations that could be tuned reasonably well with *nothing at all* attached to the FM inputs, and no internal antenna, could no longer be received with the Terk Tower attached.
Those that could be tuned with the antenna attached had grotesque distortion. This despite turning the gain adjustment dial in either direction. It was functioning, as at low levels of gain, the station dropped off completely, and definitely changed as you moved it. So it wasn't just broken. I could get barely acceptable reception on a few stations with micro-fine adjustments of the dial. But even at best all stations had all sorts of fuzz and dropouts. You could turn it up enough to swamp the receiver ACG circuit, but the distortion never goes away as you turn it down the point of losing lock completely.
On AM, it doesn't make it worse, but it doesn't help, either. On all the weak stations I have tried, I simply can't tell the difference in the results. Once again, fiddling with the gain control changes it, but at maximum boost, it's pretty much what I was getting with the the teeny little loop antenna that bolts to the back of the tuner. At lower gain settings you just can't hear the station at all.
For all intents and purposes, it just doesn't seem to work, I tried it on 4 different tuners/radios in 4 different places in my house, and in every case it made the FM reception MUCH worse than the stock antennas, and AM reception no better than the stock or internal antennas. I'm probably going to break it open and try attaching different lengths of wire in place of the stock antenna, and see if that helps. But I get the impression that the booster amplifer just isn't up to the task of passing 107.7 MHz., and introduces too much distortion at FM freqencies. It almost has to be - because a plain old wire that length is MUCH better.
Even though it was pretty inexpensive, I was very disappointed with this antenna. You'll get FAR better reception with a bent coat hanger. And that's free with your dry cleaning.
(addendum - I finally broke my antenna open, and now it's clear why it doesn't work on AM any better than a stock antenna. It's because inside the tower, for AM, is a small, unamplified, loop antenna! It's not even connected to the circuitry. Which begs the question of why turning the dial affects the AM performance. I speculate that the AM loop and the FM amplifier are interfering with each other - and that the AM is getting into the FM amp, causing modulation at the FM subcarrier frequency, hence, really fuzzy FM reception - and also dragging energy out of the AM loop more or less depending on the FM amp setting. BTW, the FM antenna is a piece of bare copper wire running the length of the antenna. Short answer is still the same - it's junk, don't waste your money)

HP Remote IR receiver (paintbrush) - For use with Picasso remote control 5070-2584 Review

I Have been using the 5070-2584 ir receiver (and the blaster cable 5188-6055) with my HP notebook. It's great. Just follow the windows media center setup instructions and you'll have a dvr. It works with any provider's settop box. I have Directv. The photo doesn't show the blaster cable (emitter cable that goes to the settop box infra-red window). And the receiver is pretty generic. It's used on a huge number of products, so ignore the Picasso reference.

I needed a wireless solution for a sub as I wanted to place it on the opposite wall of the TV, this due to a common wall where the TV is mounted. The sub fit real nice behind by primary listening chairs and sounds great. No problems with the wireless and it provides more than enough bass! The only thing that would have made it better for my application is a remote (wireless) level control as I live in a townhome and need to adjust accordingly depending on the day of the week and the time of day.....aren't I a nice neighbor? Real good fit and finish and installed in a few minutes.....love it!!! Lance
