RedEye Universal Remote System for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad Review

RedEye Universal Remote System for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Companies have been coming up with new and innovative ways to use the iPhone ever since the iPhone was available and particularly since the App Store opened. ThinkFlood has introduced their own creative use for the iPhone called RedEye, a hardware and app solution that turns your iPhone into a remote control for, well, pretty much darn near anything that uses an infrared (IR) remote signal.
Because the iPhone is not an IR transmitter, it cannot work directly as a remote for devices that use IR technology for remote control. The hardware portion of the RedEye solution is a small box, slightly larger than Apple's docking station, that also doubles as a charging station.
I'm a sucker for good packaging and ThinkFlood did a nice job with the RedEye. In the box are the RedEye station, the power cord, and inserts that make the various versions of the iPhone or iPod Touch fit snugly in the station. I have a thick skin on my iPhone and was able to use one of the inserts with my iPhone without removing the stick-on skin. One thing that would have been nice is if each insert has some sort of labeling to indicate which version of the iPhone or iPod Touch it was for.
Once plugged in, the unit emits a blue light to indicate it has power. To use the RedEye, the RedEye app (free from the iTunes App Store) must be installed on the iPhone or iPod Touch. When you first launch the RedEye app, a tutorial video launches explaining how the unit works and how to set it up. This was very nice as there are some tricks to setting the unit up that wouldn't be intuitive to the beginner. I did not have any difficulty setting the unit up other than getting the network setup, which was fully explained in the tutorial had I watched that in full first. And once you set up your first device, the rest come naturally.
Once I was correctly networked, the rest was a breeze. You start by configuring what ThinkFlood calls "Rooms." In my case I set up a room called "Basement." Within that room, you can have any number of activities, for example "Watch TV" or "Watch DVD" or even customized activities. You are only limited by what devices you have that accept an IR signal. Configuring which devices to control couldn't be easier. Simply select the manufacturer from the list in the App, send some test signals to the device, and select the signal that works.
Once you are fully configured, your iPhone works exactly as a stock remote would, perhaps better. The screen on your iPhone looks just like a remote. You can also use multi-touch gestures for commands to your device. For the advanced and not so common commands (for example, adjusting aspect ratio), there is a separate command screen that appears to cover any command that your device is capable of accepting. It was quite simple to set up the devices I tested and I was pleasantly surprised how all-encompassing the list of devices is. I tested televisions and stereos from 3 to 10 years old from various manufacturers and had no problems.
ThinkFlood provides wonderful support for their RedEye product. On their website you can find FAQs, video tutorials, the manual and email support. The video tutorials are particularly useful for setup. As a consumer, I appreciate companies that provide thorough support as ThinkFlood does.
At $188, the RedEye is a bit pricey. However, if you compare what this unit can do to something like the Harmony universal remotes, the price is definitely in the ballpark. One drawback is that, although you can configure several rooms, activities and devices, you would need a RedEye base station in each room assuming your rooms are physically outside the IR range of 35 feet or so. On the flip side, you get an extension of sorts because your signal to the Redeye is WiFi, which has a much farther range depending on your wireless setup. So you could centrally locate your RedEye unit between rooms to maximize the IR + WiFi range.
For someone looking for a remote control solution without having to have a dongle or device attached to the iPhone, this is the answer. The device is unobtrusive, only requires one cable for power and is simple to use.

With the RedEye system you can use your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to control your TV, stereo, cable box, DVD player, and many other devices that receive standard (infrared) signals. In other words, no more hunting through your sofa cushions for all those different remotes - all the control you need is right in your pocket.

AmbiCom WST-KIT Wireless Stereo Headphone Kit Review

After hunting around on the net for a while, I happened to stumble on these headphones. I was a little reluctant in my decision, mainly because there wasn't a single review for this product, but I decided to go ahead and purchase a pair. Luckily I purchased a very functional and stylish pair of headphones. I also promised myself I'd leave a review just in case someone else was in the same boat as me. The headphones themselves are light, I don't know why I was expecting them to be heavy but they weren't. As far as sound quality, they're not perfect but they do sound good. As a side note when I first used them the bass in the headphones was surprisingly high, but after a few minutes the headphones played regularly. When comfort and fitting com into the picture, there perfect. A similar product offered by Logitech doesn't fit most people, and thats were these shine. These headphones have a very surprisingly long ford, but I assume there is still something in the box that allows you to adjust that. All in all if you cant fit the Logitech headphones, go for these.

SIRIUS Stratus 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit Review

SIRIUS Stratus 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit

Display is easy to read. Setup was very easy. Sound quality is good (not as good as my iPod). Wish it had a "scan" option to autoplay a few seconds from each channel. Well worth the $40 I paid for it on Amazon. Overall I am very happy.
After contacting customer service I learned that the Sirius Customer Service Database has all account passwords available in plain text for CS reps to read and have access to. It is unacceptable that a modern technology company would not safeguard customer passwords from the eyes of employees, making my password vulnerable to theft by an unhappy employee, contractor, hacker or anyone else who could gain access to Sirius CS database records. Too many companies have been forced to disclose the theft of customer data due to human error and Sirius is leaving the door wide open to a future security breach. My warning: If you use Sirius, use a unique username and password during account step to safeguard your identity and confidential account info.

One of Sirius' easiest to use and most affordable receivers, the Sirius Stratus 4 is a must for satellite radio fans who want a less-expensive entry into the satellite radio market. Just like other Sirius-compatible receivers, the Stratus 4 offers a large, easy-to-read display and an intuitive front control panel--a 2.5-inch, 3-line display, to be exact. But for people who spend a lot of time in the car, the Stratus 4 is designed to seamlessly complement your driving routine thanks to the bundled car kit.
As an added convenience, the Stratus 4 supports Sirius' universal docking architecture for easy compatibility with other Sirius accessories and docks in other vehicles and in the house. An intuitive three-line display tells you the channel name and number, artist name, and song title. The receiver also lets you program up to 10 presets of your favorite streams, as well as search by channel name and music category. And with a quick press of the one-touch jump button, you can instantly switch between the traffic and weather reports for your city or any of the other music, news, or entertainment channels. Other programming details include direct station tuning via the numeric buttons and a channel lock option.
The Stratus 4 also includes a built-in FM transmitter that sends Sirius radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make a direct connection to enjoy the full array of channels. Simply set an empty FM frequency on your radio and tune the Stratus 4 to the same frequency. The transmitter also works with other FM tuners, such as the one on your home stereo, but is easily paired with the car thanks to the vehicle kit, which includes everything you need for listening to Sirius while driving. Other features include a real-time clock, a parental lock function that restricts listening to locked channels, and large easy to use buttons. The Stratus 4 measures just 9.5 x 7.5 x 3 inches.

Wireless Audio/Video Sender/Receiver System Review

Wireless Audio/Video Sender/Receiver System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, bear with me as I unpack the product - first, two sets of RCA cables for stereo audio and composite video, the receiver, the transmitter, a tiny instruction manual, and ... a power supply? No. Just one cable that plugs into the DC input of one of the two units with two exposed wires on the other end that I can, well... solder to a 12V power supply I have lying around somewhere?!
It may not be apparent from the product description, but this unit does not come with its own power supply! It's up to you to provide 12V to each of the two boxes. How many Ampere? How would I know! The instruction manual just says to hook up "any 10-15V power supply".
Well, if you have a couple of general-purpose power supplies in your garage, you can try the product itself. And you'll regret that. The sound quality is a joke, you'll essentially just hear static. I tried putting the two units next to each other with the antennas effectively touching each other, and it was still just noise with a bit of sound. At some point - after choosing the right channel, and when aligning the antennas with the moon, you will hear something, but the quality is still horrific, with a tiny frequency range that makes it sound like you're transmitting the music through a phone connection.
Most of the wireless devices in the area where I tired it ran at a different band, so I can't blame interference. It seems like the device is just bad, plain and simple. There's nothing good I could say about the little details on the side either: There are no LEDs or anything, so you can't tell whether the sender is turned off or if it just sucks. The units themselves are relatively small, if a bit ugly.
All in all, the power supply situation alone is beyond belief. This unit is supposed to be used inside buildings, where you typically don't have exposed 12V cables that you can hook your gadgets to. I could understand it if this unit was designed to be used in a car, but anything that sees its primary application inside buildings needs to come with proper 110V power supplies. But even if it did, the quality is absolutely unacceptable and makes it impossible to recommend this product.

RCA WSP150 900 MHz Wireless Speakers Review

RCA WSP150 900 MHz Wireless Speakers
Average Reviews:

I bought these to use as rear channel surround speakers after reading the positive and negative customer reviews. The biggest caveat I have is that I expected traditional speaker wire connections and found, upon opening the box, the connection is either through the headphone jack or via RCA connectors (red/white). Neither option provides the channel separation for them to be used as I intended. They are easy to install, but we have a 900MHz cordless phone and a baby monitor and there are static bursts that pop into the speakers intermittently. When dialed in, they provide decent sound for the money. We're going to hang on to them and try them out on the deck next summer.

Chances are there's one or two places at home where you'd love to enjoy music without having to go to the trouble of laying the speaker wire (or drilling the holes) to get it there. And, short of strapping on a pair of headphones, your options are pretty limited. Fret no more: The WSP150 wireless powered speaker system from RCA lets you import music from CD, radio, DVD, or virtually any audio source to nearly any room in the house--the range is about 150 feet, even through most walls and floors. The WSP150 uses the FM (frequency-modulation) technique employed in radio to transmit audio to the two speakers, each of which houses its own 2-watt amplifier. The speakers each offer a roll-on power/volume switch and a tone control/bass boost button. The system comes with two main parts: the transmitter and the speakers, all of which require close proximity to an AC outlet, unless you opt to battery-power the speakers--perfect for outdoor use in nice weather (requires four D batteries per speaker, not included). The transmitter plugs into a wall outlet and hooks into your desired audio source via a single stereo minijack-to-RCA cable (supplied). Be aware that with no master balance knob, the two speakers must be manually adjusted for equal volume. What's in the Box A transmitter, two stereo speaker/receivers, two DC power adapters (6V, for speakers), one DC power adapter (19V, for transmitter), an 8-inch Y cable adapter (.125-inch minijack to two RCA-type plugs), user's manual, and warranty information.

I wish I would have known about this great unit many years ago! I had cable running to many rooms, but only a single DSS receiver unit. With the D940, I can control my DSS receiver from any room I need. I'm glad the response time is extremely quick when using this system. It is just like having the DSS receiver right in the room. I bought two of these from Electronic Express through Amazon.com. Both were delivered in good shape and at first everything looked and sounded great. But both of these units had defects in that they would not recharge properly when connected to the transmitter / charger. When the batteries had power, the sound was absolutely fantastic, but they were not of much good if they don't recharge properly. I also was upset about the return, i.e., they did give me my purchase price back, but I had to pay the return shipping for not one but two defective products. All worked out well, however, thanks to Amazon.com, they gave me credit for the return shipping and applied it against my subsequent purchase of a 2 pair of Sony Wireless Headphones. I have had a number of problems with Audiovox recently, so they are not in my buy list anymore. One other thing. The transmitter / charger is so light, it is difficult to not turn it over when plugging in the headphones.

The battery, which is claimed by Creative to last "up to" 7 hours, lasts about 2 hours. So, if you need this gadget for hiking or such, be sure to carry extra batteries. I have had similar experience with other Creative devices. Apparently, their marketing department is completely detached from their
engineering teams. Also, when the transmitter and the headphones are less that 1 foot apart, there are noise and interruptions. Other than that, the headphones are OK, I guess. Given my experience, I would probably not have bought them, but I am too lazy to return.

JBL Control 2.4G On Air Wireless Speaker System (Pair) Review

JBL Control 2.4G On Air Wireless Speaker System (Pair)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's the good news: The sound quality is nice. The frequency response seems very detailed, and these diminutive speakers pack more bass than looks would suggest. No complaints about the sound quality.
Here's the bad news: These speakers have MANY very serious flaws that make them unusable.
1) The speakers have a timeout mechanism - they go into a standby mode if the sound stops transmitting. That's fine, but the standby mode mechanism is very overeager: the speakers often enter standby if the music volume stops, or even if the volume just gets a little too quiet, for a short period of time - even as little as 5 seconds. So the speakers can go into standby even during a quiet section of otherwise loud music, and the wakeup process is not trivial: it may take 10 seconds or more to reacquire the signal once the music kicks in again. Worse, this quirk is hard-coded and not adjustable; you can't disable or adjust the standby mechanism.
In short, these $200+ speakers have a tendency to cut out the music for 25 seconds or more when it dips too low. That is a fatal flaw. And it's not the only one:
2) These speakers will SHUT DOWN your Wi-Fi network. I have a very recent 802.11g router (a Motorola SBG900), and when there's music streaming to the speakers, my bandwidth drops from a steady 200kbps to about 5kbps. Seriously. If I unplug the transmitters (which are 10' away from both the router and the receiving computer), my bandwidth comes to life; if I plug 'em in again, my bandwidth vanishes immediately. It's terrible.
3) JBL made some very strange choices with regard to the cabling. The cable from the right speaker to the left is about 25 feet long - a bizarrely long connection for such small speakers - and unless you want to splice it, you're going to have a rat's-nest tangle of excess cable hanging somewhere between or behind the speakers. Meanwhile, the power cable is only about 18" between the active speaker and the power brick; and the power cable coming out of the brick is only about 3' long. As a result, if you mount the speakers 6' high, you'll have a massive black brick with a glowing green LED dangling at about 3', and probably a hookup to a longer power cable about 1' off the floor. It's quite sad; JBL must not have tried to actually mount these speakers before they shipped 'em out.
4) Speaking of mounting: The speakers come with wall mounting brackets that look sturdy at first glance. However, the speakers are very boxy - about 5" deep - so they'll project noticeably from the wall. Much worse, the mounting bracket is very poorly designed. For example, the speakers mount on a ball-and-socket bolt that's *way* too long - you'll see an extra 1.5" inches of bolt projecting from the wall mounting, for no particular reason. (In fact, JBL doesn't seem to trust the integrity of the bracket; they include a camera-strap-like thing for fastening the speaker to the bracket, in case it fails. Creepy.)
5) Want to buy extra speakers and dial 'em in to the same channel? Of course you do; it's wireless, right? Well, not so fast. First, JBL won't sell you *just* the speakers, so you have to buy a whole 'nother set - including a second transmitter - at full price. Second, the wireless setup has a hard limit of two speaker sets per transmitter channel. I own three sets of these speakers, and only two connect to the transmitter at any one time. I don't know why; it's completely capricious, and it severely limits the extensibility of the system.
It's really tragic that JBL made such terrible ancillary choices, because the prime virtue of these speakers - the sound quality - is very nice. But the convenience and sound quality aren't worth the hassles... particularly at such a high price point.
Bottom line: Avoid. Avoid at all costs. These things are FATALLY flawed. JBL needs to recall them and fix them... and if they don't, I'm certainly never buying their equipment again.
- David Stein

Sangean ANT-60 Short Wave Antenna Review

Sangean ANT-60 Short Wave Antenna

This antenna is great for improving weak shortwave signals. It can make a faint signal listenable. As an example, listening to VOA on 17895 kHz from Botswana, with only my Grundig radio's whip antenna, I could not make much out. But with the ANT-60 the signal improved remarkably and I could copy enough to write a reception report, and received a QSL card from VOA verifying I'd heard their Botswana transmitter.
It will *not* do much to improve a fairly good signal, but definitely improves weaker ones. I recommend this antenna to anyone who wants to enhance their listening on portable shortwave radios.

Terk TECHNOLOGY LF10S HomeNetwork Remote Video System Review

Terk TECHNOLOGY LF10S HomeNetwork Remote Video System
Average Reviews:

I purchased this item after having tried the Terk LF30S wireless system, which my 2.4Ghz cordless phone interferred with. Aside from the problems my phone caused with the wireless system, I feel that the wirless LF30S Wavemaster 30 delivered a slightly better picture. That's not to say that this item doesn't (well, read on), but I feel that it is slightly less sharp.
I first hooked up the LF10S to my phone jacks as the instructions say. However, the picture was fuzzy and the sound had static in it. Although I consider the phone wiring in my home to be in good shape, I guessed that there was just too much of it running all over the house, thus degrading the signal from the LF10S. Not being one to give up, and also being one that is relatively handy, I decided to run a dedicated phone wire from my living room to the bedroom, where I wanted the receiver to be. Aprox. $15 (100 ft. of phone wire & two surface-mount jacks) and an hour later, I had my dedicated phone line installed and tried it out. Much better!! I heard absolutely no static, and the picture was very clear. Although I previously stated that the LF30S wireless picture was sharper, that is not to say that the LF10S picture is not clear. I think most people probably wouldn't even notice the difference.
If you don't use any wireless devices that use the 2.4Ghz frequency (cordless phones or wireless networking devices), I would recommend the wireless LF30S Wavemaster 30. If you can't go wireless, then I would recommend this product on the basis of its video and audio quality, but be prepared to be slightly disappointed with the results from using your regular phone jacks. If you have a basement with an "open" ceiling like me (or even a crawl space), running a dedicated phone line would be easy to do, and would make a huge difference, especially if you do have poor picture and sound from your regular phone jacks. Even if you can't get underneath your floor or behind walls, you could even run a phone wire along the baseboard to the other room.

Discovery Channel Expedition Wireless Speakers, Portable For Indoor And Outdoor Use Review

Discovery Channel Expedition Wireless Speakers, Portable For Indoor And Outdoor Use
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased these speakers for my father, to use as supplements for our deck speakers. Unfortunately the WIRELESS sound quality is spotty, seems very sensitive to any form of electrical interference (likely due to the antenna setup, as opposed to other means of wireless communication). If I have to endure any more pop-pop-popping noise, I may snap.
Note: This is at any distance (close and far) from the speakers.
Not for use in any environment with computers, people(seems to react somewhat to galvanic skin conductance), wires, etc.
Also: It's a bit of a hassle to get the batteries into the wireless transmitter. I'm not at all impressed with this aspect of the package.
Aside from this major flaw, the speakers seem durable enough. The sound quality, when the signal is strong, is good.
In sum: Speakers = Great, Transmitter = Disappointing.
All in all, I'd say they're worth purchasing if on sale, but not in the $150 range when you can easily find a better product elsewhere.

Mini-bullets Outdoor Wireless speaker system WPBULLETW Review

These are great LITTLE speakers, i say little because if your looking for BIG Sound for your Backyard Kegger party, keep looking.
But if you want true stereo background music for your deck or patto then these are SUPER! My friend has some wireless speakers but they are mono so you can guess i was really pleased to find these.
I plugged my transmitter into the tape outputs on my stereo with standard rca cable instead of the headphone plug that came with the unit. The transmitter auto powers on and off with audio input sencing and the speakers will power off after 5 min of no signal.
The speakers are mounted upside down in the top with a cone baffle that reflects the sound out the front and back sides. Very warm sound at the default level even with the bass boost turned on. And they really sound better on the floor then on a table, go figure! The speakers are well made and definitely water proof just don't submerse them! They even have a cool blue led mood light so you can see the controls in the dark or don't trip over them. If you plan on using them often on battery power, i would invest in rechargable's.
I love these speakers and move them all over the house from the kichen to the deck or the front porch all the time. And i love it when someone else realizes theres music playing but can't figure out from where!
Hope you enjoy yours as well as i have mine.

TV Ears 2.3 MHz System Review

These are mostly junk. Too much interference, even at only five feet, and the sound level is no better than the TV. Sound quality is far worse than the TV. Honestly can't think of any reason to recommend these.
